I’ve come up with some questions you might want to use to get your Book Club discussion started. Also included are two weblinks with other possibilities. Pick which questions you’d like!

1. What did you think about the use of “dual story lines?” Was this approach effective for you?
2. Which of the three main characters, Lilia, Kost or Myk, did you think were the most completely portrayed? Which character spoke to you the most?
3. How did you view Kost’s role and actions as the story played out?
4. At times Myk expresses doubts about his belief in God. How common do you think these doubts might have been in that time and place?
5. How does Lilia change over the course of the novel? How does Myk change?
6. How did the actions of the Russian soldiers affect your reaction to the story? What are your thoughts in the context of the current Russian invasion of Ukraine?
7. How are women, and the choices they faced, portrayed?
8. What part does the theme of faith and reunification play in the novel? Was it an important aspect for you?
9. What surprised you in the novel? What did you find most interesting?
10. How is the book the same, or different, from other historical fiction novels you have read?
11. Would you have structured the book differently?
12. What might you wish to see added to the book? What could have been left out?
13. Does your family/ancestors have any personal experience with the political events mentioned in Heart Stones?
14. Does your family have a refugee history?
15. How are today’s refugee experiences similar to Lilia’s and Oksana’s? How are they different?
16. Did the novel make you think about your ancestors and their immigration struggle? What unanswered questions do you have about their lives? Have you ever explored what emotions or uncertainties they might have held?
