HEART STONES
A Ukrainian Immigration Story of Love and Hope
In 1914, a young Ukrainian family faces an uncertain future. With growing political unrest in the region, paired with rampant social injustice, they are forced to make a difficult decision between remaining in their beloved homeland or reaching for a better life across the cold Atlantic. In the end, learning of the many opportunities awaiting Ukrainian immigrants in Canada, and wanting a better life for his two young children, Myk makes the hardest choice of his life for what he hopes will be the greater good. He leaves his family and travels across the ocean to work for the railroad, with the hopes of quickly saving enough money to buy a farm and send for them.
Things don’t go as planned as WWI breaks out shortly after his departure, leaving his family at the mercy of enemy forces, whose violence and cruelty drive his wife, Lilia, and their children out of their home village and down a dark and dangerous path they may very well not survive. Meanwhile, in Canada, Myk finds himself at the mercy of the authorities, who no longer look upon him as a welcomed immigrant worker but as a potential threat to national security. With the borders closed and ships being sunk in the Atlantic, he is left without means of contacting his loved ones, or even learning how they are faring, as he struggles to survive countless obstacles to achieving his family’s dream of reuniting one day and living a better life.
